The Farm at Abbotsholme

Year 3 & 4 at the Farm

12.06.17

Farmer Tom invited us to the farm to see the sheep being sheared. He explained how the sheep were given a health check and were immobilised by keeping their head and body between the farmer’s legs to prevent it moving. They shear the sheep and then put them into a sheep dip filled with zinc solution, which helps to kill the bacteria that causes sheep rot. They check for athlete’s foot and cut their hooves by using a sheep turner which clamps the sheep into place and turns it upside down. The demonstration was very exciting and we had lots of questions which were answered. Thank you Farmer Tom.
