The Reception class held a handwriting workshop for parents last Wednesday. The children demonstrated how they begin their handwriting journey by practising handwriting patterns in salt, sand and glitter shaving foam. Dough disco followed with wonderful participation from parents. Dough disco is great fun where we manipulate play dough to music, often 80s disco tracks! The movements loosen and strengthen fingers, wrists, elbows and shoulders; important to enable handwriting to take place.
The children then demonstrated how to sit and hold the paper and pencil correctly. In the Reception class we use the ‘Magic Pencil’ approach which models cursive writing interactively on the whiteboard. The children stand behind each other and write on their partner’s back with their ‘magic finger’. A really multi-sensory approach which works well.
